Assisted hatching is a procedure in which the zona pellucida, the outer membrane around the embryo, is thinned by either the application of a dilute acidic solution or more recently with microscopic laser, mechanical disruption. It has been theorized that some implantation failures could be resulted from failure of the embryo to hatch out from the confines of the zona pellucida. It should not be used universally but might be considered in patients who have undergone through several IVF cycles that have been unsuccessful or perhaps in older women.
