The embryo transfer can be performed either day 3 (“cleavage stage embryo”) or day 5 (“blastocyst stage”) following the egg retrieval. In Ukraine, most transfers occur on day 5 once the embryo reaches the blastocyst stage. The benefit of waiting until day 5 is it provides more time to decide on the better-quality embryos since only 50%-60% of embryos be capable to become blastocysts and for that reason fewer embryos are available to transfer and freezing. Evidence base supports a higher implantation rate of a blastocyst embryo over a cleavage stage embryo.
The suggested quantity of embryos to transfer is dependent upon the woman’s age and the timing of the embryo transfer. We advise to do the embryo transfer under abdominal ultrasound guidance. A complete bladder results in a window so the uterus can be simply visualized. An echogenic catheter can be simply viewed as it courses with the cervical canal or more in to the cavity. The catheter lies 1-2 cm from the top cavity in which the embryos are put. Extra embryos which are of sufficient quality could be frozen and stored for future use. hCG pregnancy test is concluded 12 days later following a blastocyst transfer.
