Some women cannot carry a pregnancy but still can produce eggs and embryos resulted from IVF. Indications for gestational surrogacy are when the woman does not have a uterus (e.g., prior hysterectomy), has a congenitally deformed uterus, has a uterus that is unable to support pregnancy, or has a medical issue that prevents her from safely carrying a pregnancy. All the steps of IVF treatment are carried out with the exception that the embryos are transferred right into a gestational surrogate’s uterus. Before this treatment is begun, everyone concerned must undergo medical, mental, and legal counseling.
