For couples who want to prevent a multiple pregnancy or want to avoid the risks of the ovulation induction drugs, a natural cycle IVF approach can be seen. The woman undergoes monitoring with blood work and ultrasound examinations beginning on cycle day 10. The hCG is run whenever a mature follicle is identified. If the LH surge occurs, then the cycle should be canceled. The aim of natural cycle approach is the retrieval of 1 egg and the replacement of 1 embryo. The success rate is a bit lower (<10%) than conventional IVF, which is a major disadvantage of this approach.
