The results of the postpartum hemorrhage could be devastating. Clinical understating must start with identification of risks and early recognition of the hemorrhage, active control over the third stage of labor and proper use of medications, including traditional uterotonics plus an understanding of the newer antifibrinolytic agents. Invasive procedures, varying from simple compression balloons to emergent hysterectomy, all must be applied as part of a deliberate and arranged approach to hemorrhage.
