A perinatal mental illness is typical and it has multigenerational effects that could include significant maternal morbidity and mortality risks. Caregivers should lead informed discussions at the start of the prenatal course with overview of clinically achievable treatment. The partner and family should be involved if clinically appropriate. The patient should be associated with mental health services before delivery.
